When it comes to movies, there’s something for everyone. Movies let us live out our imaginative fantasies that most of us will never live in real life. And while most films focus on the actresses and actors, there are those famous few when the plot relies on a required prop – the car!
We’ve compiled a brief list of famous films that included an equally famous vehicle and where are those cars today.
1. James Bond 007’s Aston Martin DB5
The cars featured in the James Bond franchise are just as famous as 007 himself. The films’ legacy of famous cars and gadgets can be traced back to one car – the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 the spy drove in Goldfinger (1964) and Thunderball (1965). The original movie car sold at auction in 2010 for $4.6 million. And I think fans can collectively agree that there is never gonna be a Bond car as glamorous as the 1964 Aston Martin DB5.
2. The Ford GT40
With the release of the latest film Ford V Ferrari, it takes us back to the iconic car in the film Le Mans (1971). Three versions of the GT40 were built and two of them still exist to this day. The Chassis P/1074 that starred in the film was sold for $11-million to a private collector in August 2012, Rob Kauffman, an entrepreneur and owner of RK Motors. Not only did he restore it to look like it did at Le Mans, but it runs like it did, too. Kauffman even brought the car back to the French racetrack in 2018 and drove the circuit.
3. 1970 Dodge Charger
You can’t think cars in films without thinking about The Fast and The Furious franchise. While every single movie has a bunch of great cars, there is only one that takes the spotlight – the1969 Dodge Charger R/T driven by lead character Dominic Toretto. Nicknamed “Tantrum” the car was featured in multiple films in the series. It’s now up for sale at a Chatsworth, California dealership named Fusion Luxury Motors.
4. Bumblebee’s Chevrolet Camaro
Back in 2007, fans where mindblown to see their beloved childhood Autobots in their live-action movie counterparts in The Transformers. And everyone (yes, everyone) instantly fell in love with Bumblebee. Thanks to the Autobot choosing to transform into the unmistakable yellow and black striped Chevrolet Camaro, the car earned a starring role. The Camaro’s sudden fanbase saw a boost in sales which even led to Chevrolet introducing its own Bumblebee Edition cars. All 4 Bumblebee Camaros were recently sold as a group at a charity auction with the final bid coming in at $500,000.
5. “The Love Bug” Herbie
When you think ‘Beetle’ you think of Herbie and vice-versa. The Volkswagen Beetle found instant fame in a series of successful Disney films as a vehicle called Herbie “The Love Bug”. The iconic design and the lovable character of a racing car with a mind of its own, made the car hugely popular and unforgettable for decades to come. This car was sold at Barrett-Jackson’s Palm Beach auction on April 14, 2018 for $128,700, going on to become the world’s most valuable Volkswagen Beetle for a second time.
6. Audi R8 – Iron Man Series
It’s safe to assume that Iron Man is everyone’s favourite Avenger. Who didn’t love watching Tony Stark evolve and grow as a character throughout the series of films. But little do viewers realize that along with the growth of Tony Stark, happened the growth of the Audi R8. The Audi brand became synonymous with the famous superhero ever since the beginning of the Iron Man movie series when Marvel established early on that Tony Stark’s go-to car was the Audi R8. The first-generation Audi R8 came to be known as Iron Man’s ride with different versions of the car being featured across the franchise: the Audi R8 Spyder in Iron Man 2, the Audi R8 e-tron Iron Man 3, and the second-generation Audi R8 featured in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and in Captain America: Civil War.
